Duffner & Kimberly... who are they?
The early 20th century was the golden era for fine quality glass lamps & lighting.  One of the leaders and most well known designer of quality glass lamps in this time was Louis C. Tiffany.

Another company of this time who specialized in glass lamps was Duffner & Kimberly Company of New York. They were Tiffany's competitors in the art of fine glass lamp making.

The Birth Of Duffner & Kimberly Company

Duffner & Kimberly Company was born when Frank Duffner, who managed a factory which produced kerosene lamps went into partnership with Oliver Kimberly... a talented stained glass window designer.  Tiffany Studios was a direct competitor to Duffner & Kimberly -- the company Louis C. Tiffany owned ( the man who propelled Tiffany lamps into the homes of america).

Duffner & Kimberly Lamp Designs

The mission of Duffner & Kimberly Company was to "offer lighting fixtures in the purest period styles for the finest residences".  Although Duffner & Kimberly didn't have the design, je ne ce quoi of Louis Comfort Tiffany,  they still produced some amazing lamps.

Why?

Because the lamps they chose to design had a great emphasis on having a "period" look.  These type of lamps were in the style of Louis XIII, XIV, XV and XVI... Roman styles and floral styles. During the time Tiffany's floral themed lamps were very popular, Duffner & Kimberly took advantage of the popularity and created their own... even though no one could capture nature in glass lamps like Tiffany, not even Duffner & Kimberly, they still produced good quality floral themed lamps.

Duffner & Kimberly lamps were made to a very high quality -- they used the highest quality materials -- and so during the height of glass lamp popularity, around the 1900's, Duffner & Kimberly lamps fetched for a high price.
